Three year B.Sc. Nautical Science course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). It is a course leading to Second Mate's Foreign-Going Certificate of Competency awarded by the D.G. Shipping after 12 months of Sea Service, Enabling the cadets to become Navigating officers on board Merchant Navy Ships worldwide. This course is strictly residential.
Marine Engineering Eligibility Criteria:
Educational qualifications:
A pass in Plus-two (12th Standard) or its equivalent, with minimum 60% aggregate in Maths, Physics and Chemistry group and at least 50% marks in English in both 10th and 12th Standard.
Age limit:
Maximum age limit is 25 years at the time of commencement of course.
Medical standards:
Should be physically fit for sea and should meet the medical standards laid by the Director General of shipping.
Eyesight/Vision:
Candidates have to Qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from colour blindness.
JOB PROSPECTS :
Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying about 90% of the cargo by volume across the globe. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would grind to a halt. Therefore trained personnel are required for various departments of the ship and this widens the scope for employment in this field. Jobs are available with shipping companies in India and other countries.
